Just think about all the things around you that are also touched by slaves sometime in their supply chain

Chocolate maker Ferrero has pledged to eradicate slavery from farms where it sources its cocoa by 2020, as part of a growing movement by the multi-billion dollar industry to clean up its supply chains.
The Italian company, which produces Ferrero Rocher chocolates, Nutella spread and Kinder eggs, follows Nestle and Hershey as the third major chocolate manufacturer to announce new anti-slavery moves since September.
It says it will eradicate child labor and forced adult labor from cocoa plantations it uses by 2020, verified by “independent and credible” third parties. Also, it says it will publish a more detailed progress report this summer and promises improved communication to customers.

Chocolate is one of life’s greatest pleasures, but for the children working in slavery conditions in cacao fields across West Africa’s Ivory Coast, the reality behind it is anything but sweet.
Some 70 to 75 percent of the world’s cocoa beans are grown on small farms in West Africa, including the Ivory Coast. The CNN Freedom Project reports that in the Ivory Coast alone, there are an estimated 200,000 children working the fields, many against their will, to satisfy the world’s hunger for chocolate.
This Easter, take a stand against forced labor by asking your favorite chocolate brands to investigate their supply chains. Tell them you care about the people who make their products & that they should too.

"‘It’s no secret. It’s not even news. What’s new is that we have met and talked with a dozen girls. Most of them are fifteen to twenty years old. They come from social misery in Eastern Europe and are lured to Sweden with a promise of some kind of job but end up in the clutches of an unscrupulous sex mafia. Those girls have experienced things you couldn’t even see in a movie.’"

Estonia Makes Human Trafficking Illegal

priceoflifenyc:

Before: Estonia was the only country in the EU to lack specific legislation making human trafficking illegal. Parts of the human trafficking chain, such as recruiting, transporting and exploiting people, were often ignored.

The 2011 US Trafficking in Persons Report calls Estonia a “source, transit, and destination country for women subjected to forced prostitution,” noting that women, particularly from rural areas, were at risk of being forced into prostitution in the capital, Tallinn or being taken abroad to work as prostitutes in countries such as Finland, Britain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Now: The new law, voted in on March 21, makes human trafficking punishable by a maximum 15-year prison sentence and criminalizes sexual exploitation, including forcing minors to work as prostitutes or to appear in pornographic films and erotic performances.
